I’ve lived most of my life in a cage
Sometimes it’s been comfortable
Other times, it was me reinforcing
The bars that keep me
From me
But I am done being locked away
Someone’s little pretty pet
Until I do something
Say something that displeases
My owner
I will not be kept from who I am
Chastised for wanting friends
Judged for wanting laughter
Held back from my possibilites
By anyone
Your insecurities are not mine
Perceptions are not reality
You can break my wings
But I will not trade one cage
For another
